Those who love good design are constantly looking for newer and more interesting solutions to use in their interiors. Contemporary furniture is meant to offer much more than practical functionality. They are there to catch the eye, please the eye and express the stylistic preferences of their users. It is good when, thanks to their original design and high level of refinement, they deserve to be called applied art. At the same time, there are growing expectations of the functionality of furniture, which is no longer just comfortable, but also innovative and offers possibilities for individual configuration. The young creators from the NOMA agency with whom we work have met the need to combine high functional qualities and unusual design. In designing the oak furniture in the BÓN collection, they used fluting technology.

What is fluting?

Fluting is the process of milling distinct grooves in the wood surface, also known as scratches, hollows, slots or grooves. It is not a new technique, but has only recently become popular in the furniture industry. It is primarily known for its use in the treatment of decking boards, where it is supposed to provide anti-slip properties when the surface gets wet as a result of rainfall. In the case of furniture, the fluting has a purely decorative role. The fluted fronts create a spatial composition consisting of regular linear depressions that look like narrow strips. It is most often made in a vertical orientation. It allows for an effect that captivates with both regularity and non-uniformity.

Fluted furniture for demanding users

Furniture with fluted fronts is gaining in popularity and is becoming more and more prominent in contemporary furniture-making. This is for a number of reasons, which can be described in terms of their strengths:

- spatial shape

Despite their regularity, the fluting gives the furniture a dynamic feel. They interact nicely with light, producing interesting visual effects. They give the room depth and an unobvious expression. The three-dimensional effect undoubtedly adds finesse and design flair to fluted furniture.

- appealing to the senses

The fluted surface invites the user to touch it and examine it closely with the hand. It is pleasant to the touch and has a relaxing effect. It makes a piece of furniture more than just an everyday object. It makes it a work of applied art and activates senses other than sight alone.

- eye-catching

Furniture that has been finished with fluting resembles sculpture. They captivate the eye with their nobility and original expression. They are memorable and distinctive. It is not difficult to make them a leitmotif of the design and a point of reference for other elements of the interior.

- adapted to a variety of styles

Simple fluted furniture will work well in both minimalist and modern styles, as well as in classicising styles. They go well with Scandinavian and boho-inspired interiors. However, they are most often used in arrangements dictated by the japanese style.

- modernity combined with classicism

Fluted furniture tends to be minimalist and sparing in shape. At the same time, they show inspiration from classical architecture. They are a thoughtful marriage of modernity with elements of classical harmony. This is why they are so popular in the japanese style, where austerity of form is aptly combined with a warm atmosphere.

- reminiscent of craftsmanship traditions

Fluting is a technique that refers to the art of craftsmanship. The inspiration of traditional craftsmanship fits in with current trends, in which the work of professionals and master processing methods are highly respected and appreciated. The precise craftsmanship of the fluting expresses respect for the noble material wood.

BÓN oak furniture with fluted fronts

The designers of the BÓN multifunctional furniture collection took advantage of the possibilities offered by fluting and used this technology to finish the fronts of wardrobes, cabinets and chests of drawers. The grooves created as a result of fluting bring out the noble character of oak wood and emphasise its grain. The grooves were made with great precision. The grooves are arranged vertically and give the form a striking dynamic effect. The designers' idea was to combine functionality with an unusual finish. The use of natural oak combined with meticulous milling in solid wood is reminiscent of the best craft traditions. It makes wooden furniture an exclusive product and allows it to play the proverbial first fiddle in interiors. It makes them attract attention and focus the eye, while at the same time being unobtrusive, elegant and economical in form.
